How Does Baking Soda Paint Work?

The science behind this fall apple art is the chemical reaction that occurs between the baking soda and the vinegar!

Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When the two combine, they make a gas called carbon dioxide. You can hear the fizz, see the bubbles, and even feel the fizz if you hold your hand close to the surface of the paper. How fun is that!

Fizzy Apple Art

Supplies:

• Printable Apple Template
• Card stock
• Food Coloring
• Baking Soda
• Vinegar
• Squirt bottle or eye dropper
• Paintbrush scissors

Instructions:

STEP 1. Download and print the apple template.  Trace the apples onto heavy quality art paper and cut out.

STEP 2. Make up the baking soda paint by mixing together equal parts of baking soda and water to make a paste.

STEP 3. Paint the baking soda paste onto the apples.

STEP 4. Mix together 2 tablespoon vinegar and a few drops of food coloring.  Make up a variety of colors in different cups.

STEP 5. Add the colored vinegar to a spray bottle or use an eye dropper and wet the painted apples.  Watch the chemistry in action! What happens when you mix the colors?

And when the fizzing fun is finished let your painted apples dry and then use them for a fun and colorful fall decoration!
