What is Tempera Paint?

Derived from the Latin word temperare meaning “to mix”, tempera paint is a mixture of a medium bound with emulsions (liquid mixtures), dry mineral or organic pigments, and water to create the desired consistency.

Tempera paintings are very long-lasting and examples from the first century AD still exist.  Tempera paint must be applied thinly on a rigid surface, like a wooden board or card.  If applied too thickly or on thin material, the paint is at risk of flaking off and eventually cracking.

This paint is super simple to make and will last indefinitely once dry. Plus, it makes a great sensory play activity.

*** Another way to color the tempera paint is to crush sidewalk chalk into a powder and add instead of the food coloring. This will also make the tempera paint thicker.  ***
