CELEBRATE EARTH DAY WITH AN EARTH ZENTANGLE

WHAT IS A ZENTANGLE?

A zentangle is an unplanned and structured pattern usually created on small square tiles in black and white. The patterns are called tangles.

You can make a tangle with one or a combinations of dots, lines, curves etc. Zentangle art can be very relaxing because there is no pressure to focus on the end result. It really is an easy form of process art for kids!

Earth Day is coming up and its a great time to reflect on the importance of Planet Earth, and how we can look after it. Draw zentangle patterns onto our printable Earth below while also learning about stormwater runoff, your carbon footprint and acid rain.

WHY DO PROCESS ART WITH KIDS?

What do you think of when you think of children’s art activities? Marshmallow snowmen? Fingerprint flowers? Pasta ornaments?

While there isn’t anything wrong with these crafty projects, they all have one thing in common. The focus is on the end result. Usually, an adult has created a plan for a project that has one goal in mind, and it does not leave a lot of room for true creativity.

For children, the real fun (and learning) is in the process, not the product! Hence, the importance of process art!

Kids are curious, they want their senses to come alive. They want to feel and smell and sometimes even taste the process. They want to be free to let their minds wander through the creative process.

How can we help them reach this state of ‘flow’ – (the mental state of being completely present and fully immersed in a task)? Process art activities! Click here for more process art ideas!
